Going Primal

Wes set out on a Primal/Paleo diet recently. I basically told him he was crazy and "good luck." Well, a week into his journey I decided to join in. I just felt a need to do it too, maybe God was just pushing me in the right direction. If you read any of the books, you will probably be convinced to try it too. I thought there is NO way I can give up pasta, bread, grains (quinoa!), beans, and mostly SUGAR!!!! The very thought intimidated and scared me. In true Paleo you also do not ea
t dairy: cheese, milk, etc. Wes is going that route while the kids and I are not-at least no
t yet. I am also keeping Oatmeal for the kids for breakfast. They won't have it as frequently, but they can have it.

I actually had to take Joel to the doctor this week and inquired about Paleo. My main concern was with NO dairy, and the doctor is 100% supportive of Paleo. It is what his family does and what he recommends to everyone. The way of eating allowed him and his children to get off al
l of their allergy med's and he has seen huge improvements in kids with ADHD, autism, etc. He said, if you want calcium eat broccoli! This is also interesting, he said that we te
ll people to take all these calcium supplements to prevent osteoperosis and those supplements are actually causing more problems with heart disease than they are with preventing bone decay. If we eat right, everything is in balance. I know I posted things before on him not recommending baby's eat food until they are older and this is why: what we give them when they are young is junk and breaks down to sugar. Rice cereal = sugar! He says it's actually proven if you don't give kids this stuff they have higher IQ's. Joel's gonna be a genius :-) haha. (Yes, my other kids had it all!)

This post is getting long, but that's the beginning. As requested by a friend, I will try to blog some of what we have been eating this week. I started while we were on vacation, so all my meals were prepared for me for the 1st few days. It was a good challenge to be surrounded by free soda, every kind of appetizer/cracker/
chip, food, etc. that you could imagine and not give into the temptation of eating it. (I felt like I w
as on the Biggest Loser but not needing to lose any weight. haha) I had latte's with NO sugar (Yah, it's kinda gross but I'm getting over it). It was good to know I could have all that at my finger tips and avoid caving in. The first 2 days I was about to dig chocolate out of the garbage can. I was having SERIOUS sugar withdraw! It was bad. When we threw chocolate (laid so nicely on the bed after the turn down service), chips, cookies, crackers/cheese (that were delivered on a beautiful tray as a gift to our room), and so much more, in the GARBAGE it broke my heart a little. But, it also gave me confidence to know I could succeed.

I am only 6 days into this, and I have to admit, I feel great! Before, I was always counting the minutes until the kids nap time so that I could sleep! The last 2 days, i didn't even want to nap. Today, I couldn't wait to get in the kitchen and whip up some new "treats" for us. I think I'm falling in love with food, REAL FOOD! I'm actually enjoyin
g being in my kitchen. I can't clean the rest of the house because I'm COOKING! It feels so good.

Well, it's 8:45pm, if you know anything about Paleo they stress the importance of sleep... so I'm off to bed! Know why you go to sleep? So you don't eat crap! (that's my interpretation). I'll try to get some food up in the next few days.

*the picture are of my 1st shopping trip just buying Paleo (I have since filled an entire cart at Trader Joe's), 2nd is of random new cooking things (almond flour, honey, coconut flour, coconut oil, etc.) and the 3rd pic is my counter today. YES, those muffins are Paleo. No white flour, no wheat, no glueten, etc! I will post recipes soon. And, that homemade Paleo Crunch is wonderful!!! You'll see it again as well. Ez was calling it his "cereal" (Since we don't have normal cereal anymore).
